BAREFOOT BUSINESS BOX 

In 2005 I launched a national franchise.  In under 11 months, I had created The Athena Network franchise model and sold the first 6 franchise territories (as well as managing 35 groups and supporting over 500 members personally)

The revenue in the first year of business was £320K.  So, with 15 years experience under my belt, I know a thing or two about bootstrapping a business, creating a replicable model so that other people could run the business (Barefoot Business Box™) and launching a successful franchise.  

I’ve navigated so many challenges over the 15 years, starting with my first business advisor telling me that “it would never work”, a financial crash in 2008 (our next most profitable year) right up to the pandemic of 2020.  

In March 2020, overnight, everything came to a screeching halt.  I was at my grandsons birthday party when the news came that the UK was in lockdown, we called an emergency meeting that evening of all of our franchisees.  

Our meetings are all hosted at local venues so within 17 hours (before our first midday meeting the next day) we had to implement a plan to take all of our business online … we did it.  

The reason we were able to respond so quickly was because I had already created a handbook (our pivot plan) in case of an emergency just like this.  That handbook is what kept us afloat, we implemented, adjusted and implemented again.

For over 4 months my team and I have become tighter and we have managed to continue to support over 1,500 members to continue networking.  It was nothing short of amazing.  The easiest thing to do would have been to tell all of our members we couldn’t continue, that was not an option we wanted to consider and with the handbook we were able to ‘go live’ immediately.

2020 has been a year where the solid foundation the business had by creating and following our own systems  (our ‘Barefoot Business Box™’) enabled me to support all of our franchisees, our members and to keep our business going.

The results have been amazing and we could have only done it because we had the manual ‘the way we do it here’ and we all followed the manual.

I am frequently contacted and asked to help people set up their own franchise/license model and as I don’t take on 1:1 consulting clients any longer that has not been possible.  That doesn’t mean I’m not passionate about supporting women, it really is a matter of how much time I choose to spend in business (for the curious, that is three days a week).

I read The eMyth Revisited in 2003.  It really excited me.  At the time I was still working in corporate implementing creme del a creme training solutions and had not even heard of franchising before.

As I read the book there was this frisson of excitement building up in me and I realised that whatever I did I create in the future I would do so  as if I were going to sell it.

When I look back at my career path; I noticed that I was successful because I had structure.  Implementing structure did not come easily to me but when I did it I was even more successful
